We are delighted to launch 'Ribbon' by Katherine Jones for our winter opening in the Gallery. Here Jones is looking through a window into the writer Virginia Woolf's world.
"Gradually the fibres of the burning bonfire were fused into one haze, one incandescence which lifted the weight of the woollen grey sky on top of it and turned it to a million atoms of soft blue. The surface of the sea slowly became transparent and lay rippling and sparkling until the dark stripes were almost rubbed out." The Waves, Virginia Woolf.

New works by Katherine Jones RA. These relate to 'Killing the Angel in the House’, Virginia Woolf's lecture 'Professions for Women', in which she describes the need to kill the 'Angel', the domestic, caring and selfless - in order to be able to write. This in turn is prompted by Coventry Patmore's poem 'An Angel in the House' which described the perfect domestic Victorian ideal of femininity. Published in instalments from 1854 to 1862, it affirms traditional Victorian values regarding domesticity and gender roles. These works are gestural prints made using painterly inking processes.

In Katherine Jones, Dust to Pigment - Night, and Dust to Pigment - Morning, this newly elected Royal Academician pulls us into a nuanced field of meaning with her love of flora and contemplation on her life as artist and mother. On one level these are gestural prints of flowers made using a painterly inking process. Here also the two variations Night and Morning adopt kindred spirits as Jones reflects upon Virginia Woolf's lecture 'Professions for Women', 1931. In 'Killing the Angel in the House', Woolf described the need to kill the 'Angel', the domestic, caring, selfless, in order to be able to write.

Made in 2014 while a fellow in printmaking at the City and Guilds of London Art school and recently editioned, the print began with thoughts on speaking and listening. Influences included Sylvia Plath's, 'The Bell Jar', the science experiment of placing a ringing alarm clock inside a bell jar and gradually removing the oxygen until the sound is no longer audible and bees and the decrease in their numbers.
