A lilac paradise. Early morning, cold air, clear light, low tide. The headland of the south shore recedes into a lilac blue haze, and purple shadows of rocks on the foreshore slope into the distance. This is Nature at her most uplifting, a day where your soul bursts to be alive.
Price includes package, postage and framing in a wood painted tray frame, available in either black or white.

The branches stirred against the sky. The familiar glow of the opal through the trees, luminous and calming. Ancient twisted limbs embrace, their outlines refract the sky and water. The distant headland shimmers in a blue haze.
Also show in the pictures the original gouache study for this painting in my sketchbook.

The distant shore floated dream-like above the blue-grey water, timeless and still. Trees raised their heads above the grey canopy, fan like above the granite houses that nestled at the shoreline. The orange buoy glowed in the soft light. Calm and still.

Two trees stand side by side, joined at the hip. Old friends, staunch against time. The river glints from beyond, a flash of light beneath the sullen sky. A sense of anticipation hangs heavy in the air. A moment of wondrous beauty, hidden to most, gone in a second. Grasses arc in the wind, foretelling of the storm incoming.

Painted from plein air studies done on site at this quiet Helford creek. The muted spectrum of Autumn and the shapes of the trees and ripples on the water caught my eye. I love the soft lilacs and purples you get on an overcast day, with occasional flashes of intense moss green.

There is something about seeing a plume of smoke rising from a distant chimney that gives me a strong sense of home which I can feel in the pit of my stomach, a warm tingle. This painting is about that feeling. Walking over scrubby fields, heavy dew blue in the grass, in the distance a solitary ploughed field glows pinkish red in the weak sunlight. The wisp of smoke from the home fire rises and dissipates into the clouds. A beautiful mundane moment in the countryside.

A painting of hope. That feeling when the sun breaks through. This is a view up to the mouth of the Helford River. I love the vista across the farm fields to the magical water ahead. The grass shimmers in the early morning light, shaking off the blue shadows of night and dew, and picking up the warmer hues of the sun. I use layers of paint lightly applied to create this shimmer impression, it’s like the painting is alive.

Second of my Porth Sawsen paintings, a simple scene, just wanted to capture the curving sweep of the tideline along to the familiar trees that fringe the Helford. It was a breezy day which ruffled the water lightly. Slightly muted blues and beiges with the odd pop of pink showing through, a gentle, calming painting.

The headland on the Ferryboat Inn beach on the Helford is a familiar spot for many. I love it in the quiet of winter, with the orange flecked sunrises emerging from behind the trees. The delicate wisps of clouds hover above the still river. The grey sand of the beach rendered blue in the half light of dawn. A very peaceful moment, time to pause and reflect, a still life.

The light in this painting was inspired by a river trip under the Harvest full moon so bright that you would think it was the sun. It lit up the bay with its glorious magnetism. At the same time, swimmers have flocked to the Helford beaches to swim under the stars and catch the biolumensense in the cold clear waters. This painting is a celebration of moonlight and swimming under the stars.

This is the view out from Cow Beach on the Mawnan side of the Helford, looking across to Nare Point on the Lizard. This particular morning there was a stunning moody sky with a pop of apricot on the horizon. I wanted to capture that sense of brooding and also the shapes of the rocks on the beach which look almost carved. It was one of those moments on a walk when you just stop and take a breath and marvel at the colours of Nature.

This is the original Cornish name for the beach that lies at the foot of Trebah Garden. The view is from the footpath above the beach, always a good spot to pause and take it all in, perched on an ancient stone stile. This painting is all about two things, the gentle patterns carved on the sand shingly beach by the winter tides, and the soft muted turquoise of the Helford waters. At this time of year, when the skies are often resolutely overcast, the river still glows, uplifting the spirit. I actually love this quiet time of year. The blossoms are emerging on the magnolia trees and spring bulbs are starting to show, and the soft light is lengthening each day. The Cornish winter is a thing of beauty.

"The river of life" is inspired by the imminent arrival of Spring and that great sense of new life on a sunny day where everything is sparkling and alive. I am building up layers to create textures of water, light and the river mud and how they bounce off each other to create a great sense of energy. The scene is of Scott's Quay, a quiet creek on the Helford River where low tide brings some beautiful curves in the mud left by the tidal streams.
I am noticing a couple of new themes developing. The arcs and shapes of tides, either as waves on the beach or the lines left by the receding water. I find these very soothing to look at, marking the inevitable passage of time, a constant element in every day.
I am also playing with the different luminosities and hues of water at different states, times of day, year and depths, and the effects of light on it. Seeing water in the landscape has always lifted my spirits from when I was a child and you would eagerly await that first glimpse of sea when arriving on holiday. Even living by the sea now and seeing it every day I still get that burst of exhilaration. The way water seems so alive, how it glows and wraps itself around objects is something I love to paint.

This is a particular view up high looking down onto the river, both banks can be seen snaking away. The painting is about the feeling of elation I always feel at this point, I don’t know quite what it is but my heart always skips with joy as I look at this view. It makes you feel quite small looking at it, looking down on this perfect little world. The colours are very much as the autumn is just starting to show, hints of bracken red and skies that hint at both rain and sun. I love the changing light you get at this time of year, and standing up on the high ground you can watch the weather systems blow in and out.
