Calm morning on my favourite swimming beach on the Helford. A milky light, sun just breaking through, vertical shimmers of water. The familiar rocks and trees soar overhead and in the distance the pea green hump of the Mawnan headland fades into the morning mist. A place to linger.
Framed in a simple white wood tray frame, reading for hanging on your wall.

Second of my Porth Sawsen paintings, a simple scene, just wanted to capture the curving sweep of the tideline along to the familiar trees that fringe the Helford. It was a breezy day which ruffled the water lightly. Slightly muted blues and beiges with the odd pop of pink showing through, a gentle, calming painting.

A special scene. The sun sets over the village, viewed from the terrace of the Port Navas Yacht Club. Beautiful granite cottages fringe the creek, a light is left on in one to guide the way home in the dark. I love the luminosity of the colours here, faint orange and pink sky and water, the soft green of the field, and the lilac shadows. Early summer evening light over the village, the creek alive with the shades of dusk. Everything is still, lights are flicking on in the houses now. A magical Helford creek at rest.
Price includes a wood tray frame, black or white stained options.

The branches stirred against the sky. The familiar glow of the opal through the trees, luminous and calming. Ancient twisted limbs embrace, their outlines refract the sky and water. The distant headland shimmers in a blue haze.
Also show in the pictures the original gouache study for this painting in my sketchbook.

There is something about seeing a plume of smoke rising from a distant chimney that gives me a strong sense of home which I can feel in the pit of my stomach, a warm tingle. This painting is about that feeling. Walking over scrubby fields, heavy dew blue in the grass, in the distance a solitary ploughed field glows pinkish red in the weak sunlight. The wisp of smoke from the home fire rises and dissipates into the clouds. A beautiful mundane moment in the countryside.

Two trees stand side by side, joined at the hip. Old friends, staunch against time. The river glints from beyond, a flash of light beneath the sullen sky. A sense of anticipation hangs heavy in the air. A moment of wondrous beauty, hidden to most, gone in a second. Grasses arc in the wind, foretelling of the storm incoming.

A solitary boat, tied up to this secluded quay on the Helford River, the tide is too low to be able to navigate upriver. I like the sense of anticipation in this painting, waiting for the tide to turn and yet enjoying the moment of quiet. Several of my paintings feature solitary boats, there is a presence to them which I like, a suggestion of life and people being nearby.
The price include a beautiful white stained tray frame.

This painting is an impressionistic view of Scott’s Quay on the Helford, on a sunny midsummer day. The shady parts of the river glow a deep green, reflecting the overhanging trees, whilst the river is a mirror to the tapestry of blue sky and white clouds above. This was painted on a pink primed canvas, and flashes of pink burst through to add to the luminosity of the light bouncing off the water and trees.
This painting comes in a off white painted tray frame. It is also shown paired with its sister painting "Contemplation".

About "Frenchman's Creek dusk"
This oil painting was originally inspired by the magical light seen whilst sailing upriver to Gweek for the winter layup. Leaving Helford Passage around dusk to catch the high tide, the journey was stunning, gliding through the waters, the riverbank almost touching distance at times. The only sounds were the hull cutting through the water and the calls of birds settling into their roosts for the night. This painting captures a moment in time passing Frenchman's Creek, always an atmospheric spot and impossible not to think of Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel.
The original oil painting was created on Arches Huile paper, with a deep rose ground. The primed paper is revealed through scraping back into the oil paint, creating a luminosity with underlying pinks to create the reflected dusk sky in the shimmering waters of the Helford.

This is a particular view up high looking down onto the river, both banks can be seen snaking away. The painting is about the feeling of elation I always feel at this point, I don’t know quite what it is but my heart always skips with joy as I look at this view. It makes you feel quite small looking at it, looking down on this perfect little world. The colours are very much as the autumn is just starting to show, hints of bracken red and skies that hint at both rain and sun. I love the changing light you get at this time of year, and standing up on the high ground you can watch the weather systems blow in and out.
